What is a moon boot used for?
A moon boot is a medical walking brace used to immobilise and protect the ankle and foot after injury or surgery. By limiting movement in the affected area, it supports the recovery of damaged tissue and bone without the stress of unprotected weight-bearing.
Common uses include:
- Grade 2 and 3 ankle sprains and strains
- Stable foot and ankle fractures
- Post-surgical recovery
- Achilles tendon injuries
- Stress fractures in the foot
Unlike a cast, a medical moon boot can be removed for hygiene and assessment, making it a more practical option for many patients. Most are adjustable in fit, and some models include air cell technology for added compression.
Your treating clinician will advise whether a CAM boot is appropriate for your specific condition and recovery stage.
Can you walk in a moon boot?
Most moon boots are specifically designed to allow walking during recovery, though the level of weight-bearing permitted depends on your injury and your clinician’s instructions. Össur CAM Walkers feature a wide, low-profile sole and shock-absorbing footbed that work together to support a steady, safer stride.
A few things worth knowing:
- Some patients are advised partial weight-bearing only; your clinician will specify what is appropriate for your situation.
- Walking in a moon boot on uneven surfaces requires care; always follow any mobility guidance provided by your healthcare team.
Our CAM Boot range
Standard CAM boots
Our standard CAM Boots come in tall and short heights to accommodate different leg shapes and preferences. These walkers feature a contoured shape designed to sit comfortably on the leg and a breathable liner that sits close to the skin. A wide, low-profile sole supports a steady stride, while the shock-absorbing footbed cushions each step. These are a reliable option for day-to-day use during your recovery period.
Pneumatic-enhanced versions
This version includes integrated air cells that offer consistent, adjustable support. Linked bladders can be inflated using a simple built-in pump, helping the boot feel secure around the ankle and lower leg. Designed with comfort in mind, these medical moon boots feature moisture-wicking liners and ventilated panels to help reduce heat and dampness. The fastenings are easy to adjust, giving you a more tailored fit without any fuss.
Child-friendly sizes
Smaller patients can benefit from the same great design, tailored for growing feet. Our paediatric CAM Boots are lightweight and easy to wear, with the same breathable materials and low-profile soles found across the range. They’re designed with simplicity in mind: easy to put on, easy to adjust.
Accessories that go further
We also offer a selection of accessories engineered to enhance comfort and functionality. Hygiene covers protect indoor floors when moving between environments. Even-up shoe balancers help align leg length when a moon boot is worn on one foot. Replacement liners and seamless under-socks are available to promote cleanliness and comfort. There’s even a toe guard available for added protection when needed.
Moon boot vs ankle brace: what’s the difference?
A moon boot and an ankle brace serve different purposes: a moon boot is a rigid medical device for immobilisation after significant injury, while an ankle brace is a softer support used to stabilise the joint during activity or mild injury recovery.
Here’s a quick comparison:

If you are unsure which option suits your situation, a physiotherapist or GP is best placed to advise you.
What happens when you remove your moon boot?
It is completely normal to notice some changes in your limb once the boot comes off. Most are temporary and expected, as your body has been in a period of limited movement and simply needs time to readjust.
Healthcare professionals note that you may experience:
- Muscle thinning: Your leg may look and feel different due to reduced muscle use during immobilisation, which is a normal part of the process.
- Swelling, stiffness and discomfort: These can persist for several weeks after removal. Keeping the limb elevated when resting can help.
- Dry or itchy skin: A gentle moisturiser or baby oil can help restore comfort. Avoid scratching the area.
- Sun sensitivity: Skin that has been covered for weeks is more vulnerable to UV exposure. Apply sunscreen before heading outdoors.
- Reduced physical capacity: Manual work, sport and high-impact activity should be eased back into gradually, as rushing this stage increases the risk of re-injury.
Always follow the discharge plan provided by your clinician, and check back in with them if anything feels off after the boot is removed.
